Correct spelling is important to your writing style, but good grammar is even more important. New writers sometimes begin with short and simple sentences. As you develop your style, you may begin to use longer sentences.. Short sentences can become boring to an avid reader. If you decide to add longer sentences to your writing style, you will need to learn about punctuation marks, especially commas, semicolons, colons, question marks,and quotation marks and where to use them.You will also need to know about adjectives and adverbs and how to apply these modifiers to the words thy modify. A sentence can sound quite funny if the modifier finds itself tied to the wrong noun or verb. As you carefully edit or revise your writing pieces, you will find the misplaced modifiers.
Revise As You Go Or After Your Writing Piece Is Finished
You can revise as you go or when you finish a writing piece. I think it is more important to get your ideas on paper and to keep pen to paper right up to the finished product. If you draft your piece in longhand, you will find that the pen will seem to have a mind of its own and the ideas will begin to flow. Successful writers say that you may find other ideas to incorporate into your written piece as you begin your revision after you have finished your original writing The proofreading and revision will usually take more time than the original writing and the process is more difficult. You can weed out the deadwood during your revision process here, subtracting modifiers which do not add anything of value to the sentence structure. Pay particular attention to adjectives, adverbs and sentence structure. I often read my written product out loud so I can hear the rhythm of the words. During this process I watch closely for typographical errors and correct them as I find them. As you revise, you will probably find sentences which need rearrangement or to be made more concise. You will find adjectives and adverbs applied to the wrong noun which ruins the sentence structure. Take your time for revision. If you are a new writer and you have trouble recognizing incorrect sentence structure, it will help to diagram the sentence.
Don't Meander- Stick to Your Theme
Just like in public speaking, you can't digress into something else that drifts away from your theme or topic. Listeners and readers will get lost in your meanderings and you may get lost too. Although revision is more difficult than writing, its necessity can't be.emphasized enough. It is much easier and more fun to write something fresh and filled with good ideas than to revise a piece. Sometimes the new idea is the one that gets published.
